As of right now, VERY. What you see above is the windshield the car came with. It’s the last exterior component I need for the car. So here’s how my attempts at getting quotes has gone down:
1. The first place could get one shipped from Germany and installed for $1200. Mind you,
I’d read about people having theirs replaced for under $500 and as low as $200.
It was a genuine 924 GT (I think they meant Carrera GTS
) windshield,
so I inquired about using a 944 windshield because the ‘83-85.1 944 windshield is a carryover from the 924
.....They never got back to me.
2-3. Neither of their vendors had one in stock for any 924s or early 944s.
4. The same as 2 and 3, but they mentioned if I could find a used one, they’d happily install it. So they pointed me to one in Toledo, still attached to an ‘84 944. I’ve never pulled a windshield and would have to pay for it whether or not it breaks, then drive it an hour back home and take it to be fitted.......Not the worst gamble, but a gamble nonetheless.
5. Same as 2-4.
So now, I’ve contacted Safelite as my last resort prior to attempting removing one from a junkyard car, and I have to wait for them to get back to me on that . Whether or not covid is playing a role in this, who can say. So yeah, it’s going great!

Ah, the joys of old car ownership! The windshield of my car is cheap because they used them for so long but I dread anything happening to the rear because that was only for 5 years almost 50 years ago. Even then it’s going to be easier to find than your windshield. Good luck!

People say my MR2's convex rear window must be expensive, being such a weird shape. To them I say, all the glass on every car is a unique shape, I’m sure it’s fine.
This is the real trouble - oldness, rareness.

I’ve often wondered how much it would cost for my 85 Jaguar. It’s not cracked or chipped but is a bit hazy around the edges which annoys me.

How about a ’78 924? Car-part.com shows one in Detroit.

Any local glass shops?

You’d think for a series of cars with a windshield that’s identical on over 200,000 of them, it’d be straightforward. But I’ve found NLA and rare engine parts easier than this piece of glass!

I saw that as well, but with no experience pulling a windshield, I bet they’ll charge me to try and pull it, even if it cracks or breaks. That’s what the yard in Toledo said.

Is there no way to remove the haze? Polish or buffing?

The five shops I called that weren’t Safelite couldn’t find any vendors with one. And the one that could get one wanted $1200 shipped from Germany and installed....

I’ll give that a try tomorrow.

I have to imagine that for most cars demand eventually reaches a point low enough that the bean counters cut off making any more and they coast along with existing stock until it runs out. Bean counters don’t count on enthusiasts keeping certain cars alive long after most of their peers have been turned into toasters.

I’ve never pulled one either. Found a few YouTube videos that are... less than encouraging.
“ Windscreen Removal FAIL - Porsche 924 K20 Build #13 ”
“ Total FAIL - How NOT To Remove A Windshield ”
“ Porsche 944 - Windshield Removal FAIL ”
(And no, I did not include the word “FAIL” in my search terms.)
BUT, note that all of these videos take place inside garages... Maybe if you pick a nice hot sunny day, the adhesive on the donor car would be more pliable?

This might seem stupid but what about rock auto.com?

Funny you say that, they had them on there once and they were around $150. I haven’t seen them on there for over a year.

I’ve seen those videos and they definitely don’t spark confidence. I doubt I’d have the luxury of a garage to attempt a pull ei ther.

That's a pain!
![]() 07/22/2020 at 23:38 |

You’re not wrong. It just very perplexing, as I believe the 924/944 following is more than sufficient to warrant replacements still; if that’s the case.

Can’t be that hard since I can get one for AU$165 plus freight ...say AU $200. Plus fitting...
https://www.autoglasswarehouse.com.au/porsche-924-944-1-1976-to-1-1988-2dr-coupe-front-w
And the old 924/944 was never that common here to begin with!

For sure. Time is our worst enemy here. The more time passes, the less parts and pieces available and able to be found.

WTFH! Apparently some guys on Rennlist have had replacements recently. The most recent being last month for about $200USD !! Somehow the southern US can find them like nothing and the north is SOL. At least that’s how it feels haha.

Well, what I’m is suggesting is that pulling the donor windshield in the hot sun might be easier than doing it in a garage. Sure, the heat makes for unpleasant working conditions, but letting the sun soften that adhesive seems like a big advantage.

Such a pain. IF I knew this would be an issue, I might’ve done this before repainting. In hindsight, I should’ve done the glass before repainting but such is a life lesson.

Not sure, I suspect it’s delaminating a bit, The surface is clear. It’s also tricky because the rubber seals are awful which is why 100% of those cars have rust around the windows.

The bottom corners look foggy but it must be deterioration of the rubber layer as it’s a little yellow too.
Of course, this rust isn’t going to fix itself either. The back is even worse. The seals on these cars were trash even when new.
But meh looks good from 20 feet:
